The Latest Work at the Spokane Airport

The Latest Work at the Spokane AirportSpokane International Airport is located in the Airway Heights area of Spokane County. It is a smaller airport compared to the Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEATAC) but it provides convenient air travel to many destinations across the world with direct and indirect flight service. The airport is currently under construction to expand the C Concourse.

About the Spokane International Airport

The airport is jointly owned by the county and the city of Spokane. The airport encompasses 6,000 acres with services offered from six commercial airlines and three airline cargo carriers. Spokane International is the second largest airport in Washington State and employs over 3,000 people. The airport has three concourse sections, a parking structure, long-term paid parking lots, a cell phone lot, and even a car wash which cars utilizing paid parking lots can use for free upon picking up their vehicle after traveling.

The C Concourse Expansion

The C Concourse Expansion is funded partly through Federal grants and bonds as well as Passenger Facility Charges. The expansion will bring three new gates to the concourse that will load through passenger bridges from the second story and will replace the current ground boarding gates. The upper gates already in Concourse C will also be upgraded. There will be an extended ticket counter and new exit lane technology to improve security. The project is an environmentally friendly LEED-certified build.

In addition to new gates, the new concourse will have expanded passenger services including accessible facilities including restrooms and companion care rooms as well as changing stations and special spaces for nursing mothers. There will also be new service animal relief spaces. Waiting areas will be larger and new restaurants will be integrated.

The New Expansion will Feature Local Eats

Along with a new concourse, the airport will also be starting a new contract with a brand new concessions company. The entire airport in addition to the new area will have brand new restaurants highlighting local restaurants. Some of the featured local eats are said to include Jack and Dan's Bar and Grill a popular spot in the Logan Neighborhood, the Iron Goat Brewing, Wanderlust Delicato, Shelby's Burgers from Latah Valley, Method Juice Cafe, Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese out of Couer d'Alene,  and more than one Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters location.

So far a contract has not been officially signed, but the new concession company that put in a bid is known as SSP America. They were the only company to make a proposal after the airport published a need for a new operator. This concession company is already working in the Seattle and Portland airports. They are known for utilizing local companies to provide food for airports.

The expansion of the Spokane airport is much needed as airport traffic has increased significantly in the last 8 to 10 years. This is the first phase of airport improvements. Concourse C is expected to be finished in 2025. There are future plans that will have to wait for more funding to be allocated to create a centralized check-in area for all concourses and gates. This will bring all passengers to one place to check in luggage and go through security checkpoints. Once through security, travelers will utilize a newly constructed hallway to get to their needed concourse. All of this future planned work is just talk for now with no planned timeline or projected finishing dates.
