Living in the Latah Valley Neighborhood in Spokane

Latah Valley, also referred to by locals as Hangman, is a very large neighborhood located in south Spokane. The northern boundaries of the neighborhood lie just one mile south of Spokane's downtown area and neighborhood boundaries stretch to the southernmost tip of the city of Spokane. This large neighborhood is named after the Latah Creek that runs through it and the valley the creek has carved into the landscape. The name Hangman comes from locals referring to the creek as Hangman Creek. 

Latah Valley is a large neighborhood in Spokane considering land mass. There are smaller neighborhoods located within Latah including the notable Eagle Ridge and Qualchan communities. 

Highlights of Latah- Eagle Ridge/Qualchan

Parks and Natural Areas: There are many amazing natural spaces all around the creek Two popular parks in the area include the Wentel Grant Park, a small neighborhood park, and the larger High Bridge Park. 

Qualchan Golf Course: The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course is a public course owned and operated by the city of Spokane.

Beloved Local Businesses: There are many local businesses along Cheney-Spokane Road. This area in the center of Latah is home to some of the most popular local restaurants in the city of Spokane. 

Homes with Land and Views: Latah is sort of a hidden gem of Spokane. There are homes here along the creek and bluffs that make you feel you have moved far into the country, but you are within Spokane City limits and just minutes from the hustle of more developed areas.

Proximity to Downtown and South Hill: The north end of Latah is within walking distance of Downtown Spokane and only a short drive from the south end. Spokane's popular South Hill neighborhood is right next to Latah, some consider Latah to be part of the South Hill. In South Hill, you can find several modern amenities and services including Spokane's most popular Target Location within a shopping center that also includes Mod Pizza and other shops. There are many great local restaurants and hundreds of shopping opportunities on South Hill as well as several medical professionals and more. 

Latah Valley Public Schools

Latah Valley is primarily served by the Spokane Public Schools system with a small portion of the neighborhood served by Cheney Public Schools. Many homes in Latah Valley send students to the highly desirable Lewis and Clark High School. Lewis and Clark High School is one of the most highly regarded schools in the Spokane school district as well as all of Spokane County. Residents with homes zoned for Cheney Public Schools benefit from schools that provide a small-town sense of community pride and warmth.

Vinegar Flats

Vinegar Flats is the smallest of neighborhoods within Latah Valley. It is located in the northern section near downtown. The name comes from the flat portion of land it sits on along the banks of the north end of Latah Creek and from the Keller-Lorenz Vinegar Works that was located here from 1890 to the mid-1900s. It is the oldest and first developed area of Latah Creek. Vinegar Flats has a traditional city street grid but is interrupted by the geography of the creek, cliffs, and bluffs. Vinegar Flats has boundaries from 9th Avenue to roughly around 30th. It is a very narrow and long neighborhood reaching only five city blocks wide. The homes in Vinegar flats are a unique mix of historic craftsman homes and some mobile home properties. Homes are mixed in with parks, large open fields, and local businesses. 


In the center of Latah Valley on the south boundary of Vinegar Flats is Qualchan. The neighborhood is split in two sections by U.S. Route 195. Qualchan was mostly developed in the early 1980s and is home to the golf course and the bulk of modern amenities in the neighborhood along Cheney-Spokane Road. 

Eagle Ridge

Eagle Ridge is in the southern portion of Latah Valley. Eagle Ridge as the name implies is built on the hill/cliff/bluff tops of the valley. Construction of homes in the neighborhood began in the mid-1990s and more homes have since been constructed in the area. Older properties offer larger yards and newer homes offer premier views, desirable locations, and newer home amenities.
